Deacon Brodies Tavern

At the heart of the Old Town, on the Royal Mile, sits the Deacon Brodie’s Tavern... One of Edinburgh’s famous residents, and the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Jekyll and Hyde, Deacon Brodie was a seemingly upstanding cabinet maker with a penchant for booze, gambling and robbery. There was a time when late night robberies became commonplace in the Old Town of Edinburgh, but no one suspected the respectable Deacon. However, his greed got him in the end. Brodie tried to rob the Excise Office and was spotted. He was then sentenced to be hanged. Deacon Brodie's double life was the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's work, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde – reason enough to drink in his pub, perhaps.
