VisitBritain, in partnership with the British Beer & Pub Association and Inapub, has developed a new pub-based app and website to help visitors find GREAT pubs.

Visiting a pub is the third most popular activity for overseas visitors, with four out of ten heading to a pub at some point during their stay. With this in mind, we have designed our app and website to ensure that visitors can always find a pub close to the area or attraction that they are visiting. This new service covers a whole range of visitor attractions under the headlines: Heritage, Culture, Countryside, Sport and Music and will help visitors pin point a GREAT pub which is closest to them at any one time.

Whether you’re at Blenheim Palace, Tate St Ives; in the New Forest, or looking for the pub where you favourite band once played, the PubsareGREAT app and website will be able to help you find a great place to relax.

Entry criteria

To be considered for inclusion on the Pubs Are GREAT website, pubs must meet the following criteria:

  • Be located within walking or short driving distance from a significant visitor attraction recognised by Visit Britain or an area which is likely to appeal to overseas visitors;
  • Offer a range of beers and a food menu including (where possible) classic British pub food;

  • Have been nominated for or won an industry award for the pub or an aspect of your business relevant to visitors (beer range, warm welcome, food offer, beer garden, customer service) including local, regional or national tourist awards, local newspaper awards, CAMRA awards, Loo Of the Year, Michelin Star or Good Food Guide entries;
  • Capacity to accommodate groups of visitors in the tourist season
  • Be a pub with significant heritage/cultural value in itself. For example - where important historic figures gathered and drank

About us

Visit Britain

Voted the world’s leading Tourist and convention Bureau in the 2005 world travel awards, VisitBritain is the national tourism agency, a nondepartmental public body, funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, responsible for promoting Britain worldwide and developing its visitor economy. Our mission is to grow the value of inbound tourism to Britain, working with a wide range of partners in both the UK and overseas. Through our global reach, we aim to increase visitor spend to all parts of Britain and improve Britain’s ranking in the eyes of international visitors.

British Beer and Pub Association

The British Beer & Pub Association is the leading body representing Britain’s brewers and pub companies. The Association is more than a century old and was originally founded as the Brewers’ Society in 1904. Our members account for some 96% of beer brewed in Britain today, and own more than half of the nation’s pubs. These members are also diverse in their activity – from international brewers, to market-leading managed pub companies, the nation’s largest tenanted pub companies and historic family brewers. This diversity of membership enables us to speak up for the industry, championing its cause, whilst also being able to credibly claim a wide representative base.

The Association exists to promote and protect one of the nation’s most iconic and important industries. Not only is it a significant contributor to the economy, but also a vital cultural icon unique to Britain. Almost a million jobs are reliant on our sector, and the economy is £22 billion better off.

Inapub is a leading source of pub information in the UK. We work closely with licensees and our aim is to ensure customers can find the same information online about a pub as they would if they walked into the pub itself. Inapub helps pubs and breweries connect with people by creating offers and vouchers, listing events, advertising their services, facilities, menus and drinks and building a loyal community. We also connect all of that content with our partners, publishers, tourist boards and mobile app developers. Plus, you can connect it to your social networks, like Facebook and Twitter. You do it once and we find your customers everywhere!
